Since the HBO GO Max app doesn’t play nice with all of the major streaming devices, HBO has pinned its hopes on a more portable device: the Roku. Unfortunately, if you’ve had trouble with HBO GO Max before, you know that Roku is not the most reliable Kodi-compatible box.
Like everyone else, I love HBO and made sure to download its mobile app when it became available. But I started having problems lately. Installing it would result in an error message that said “HBO Max is not supported on your device”. This error message is very frustrating, and I’ve been doing some research to find a solution.
Whether you’re using the HBO Max app on your Roku player, Amazon Fire TV or Fire TV Stick, Samsung Smart TV, Apple TV, iPhone, or PS4 and PS5 game console, you can’t help but encounter a technical error from time to time. It happens to everyone, but the good news is that there are ways to fix these problems and get back to watching your favorite shows and movies.
HBO Max is compatible with many streaming devices and media players, so you can watch movies and TV shows in more ways than one. You may already have a Samsung Smart TV or Roku streaming device in your home. Whatever works for you will save you the investment in a new unit.
So let’s get back to the main problem, which is the HBO Max app not working or downloading content to your streaming device.

Fortunately, the solutions to help you troubleshoot and fix the non-functioning HBO Max app apply to most devices, whether you’re streaming on a Roku media player, Samsung smart TV, PS4, PS5, Amazon Fire TV or Firestick, Android mobile phone or tablet, and iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV.
Method 1 – Restart the HBO Max application
The first thing you can do is close the HBO Max app on your streaming device and let it sit still for a few seconds. Try restarting the application and see if it works.
Method 2 – Connecting devices to mains
You may have a problem with your WiFi connection, renew it by disconnecting your devices. Turn off the streaming device and disconnect the router and modem from the network. Wait at least one minute before reconnecting to the network and connecting to the Internet. Now turn on the device and try again.
Method 3 – HBO MaxCheck server status
Is the HBO Max server down? If this is the case, you don’t need to move, just wait patiently. There’s nothing you can do about it, as it’s a problem that HBO Max or WarnerMedia will have to solve themselves. You can check the company’s website and official social media channels from time to time for updates on the status of the service, or try restarting the app every few minutes.
Method #4 – Log out and log in to your HBO Max account

Logging out of your HBO Max account may also help resolve some issues. You can do this via the website or the HBO Max app. Remember to log in again to access your account.
- Go to https://www.hbomax.com/ in your browser.
- Go to your profile.
- Choose Device Manager.
- Find and select the device you are using.
- Click on Exit.
- Now try logging into your account again after a few minutes.

- Choose a system.
- Click on System Upgrade.
- Now select check.
- If updates are available for HBO Max, install them.
Updating the HBO Max application on a Samsung TV
- Press the Smart Hub button on your Samsung TV remote.
- Select Apps.
- Go to My Applications.
- Click on Settings.
- Find the Auto-renew option and turn it on.
Updating the HBO Max application on a PS4 or PS5 game console
- On the PS4, go to the home screen.
- Select HBO Max.
- Click on the Options button.
- Click on Check for updates.
- For the PS5, there are automatic updates for all applications.

The HBO Max application itself can fail due to a number of factors. What you can do is a fresh install from the App Store. But before you can do that, you need to uninstall the application, uninstall it from the streaming device. Then go to the App Store on your device and reinstall the application.
If none of the above methods work, you can report your problem to the HBO Max Help Center. Please visit https://help.hbomax.com/ and indicate the error, as well as your full contact details.
